Anatomy of Typography Header Graphic

Typography : Introduction : Colophon

Colophon

Running behind every page is a Cascading Style Sheet that sets the fonts and sizes for different pieces on the page. All headers (H1-H6) are set with the font family Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; H1 is set at 140% of the base font on the page. Each header level decreases by 10% after H1 with the exception of H2, which is set specifically at 12 pt for all links.

Any text block tagged as a paragraph (<p>) are set with the font family of Georgia, Garamond, Times, serif. The size for paragraphs is set at default, and the line height (otherwise known as leading) is set at 18 pt. A slight 4pt. margin has been added to all paragraphs.

Sidebars, known as pullquotes in CSS language, are set in the same font family as the paragraphs - Georgia, Garamond, Times, serif. Font size is directly set at 10 pt. with a line height (leading) of 13 pt; alignment is set at right. A padding of 15% was added to the right and bottom margins to create a separation between the left and right margins.

Links are all set at 12pt. with the font family Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif. The lines are removed by setting text decoration to none in a CSS. Links have a background color of RGB #CC9966 and a text color of RGB #000000. Active links have a background color of RGB #FFCC33 and a text color of RGB #000000. Visited links have a background of RGB #CC9966 and a text color of RGB#FFCC33.

Finally, the introductory graphic and the header graphics for all sections use the font Papyrus. The parchment background is a tile graphic purchased from Corbis. The entire site was designed using Dreamweaver 3 and Flash 4 from Macromedia.
